Post Office Door Keepsake Box
These boxes are very simple to make but the result is a wonderful box that mixes old with new. The PO Box doors are from the 1960s and can be found on sites like eBay as well as local antique stores. For this project I made two boxes: one walnut and one sapele. They are about 11.5” x 6.5” x 3”. The joinery at the corners are box or finger joints created using the Incra Ibox. It’s important to make sure the opening of the box can fit the door perfectly. In this case, I made the opening slightly too small; by about 1/32”. To fix this, I sanded the lip of the door until it fit the box. The finish on the box is a simple walnut oil which gives the box a matte finish and close to the wood feel.
These keepsake boxes make use of vintage Post Office box doors from the 1960's I found on eBay. In the past I've also seen them in antique shops. The boxes are about 11.5" x 6.5" x 3". The finish is walnut oil which really brings out the grain but keeps it feeling like wood.
