Mosaic Portrait

This project is something I’ve had in my head for a while now. I used an app called Photobricks to generate the mosaic from a picture of my daughter and then got started preparing the material. I did some calculations to make sure I had enough of each wood species; I used walnut, cherry, maple, purple heart, bloodwood, and wenge. All of the pieces are attached to a sheet of MDF using double sided table. Beyond that, they are all glued to each other. The resolution is 96 x 80 for a total of 7680 pieces.

Picking and placing all of the pieces took the most time; I would estimate anywhere from 18 to 20 hours total. I went in batches of 56 pieces which seemed to be a happy medium that broke up the monotony of the process. After all of the pieces were secure, I attached some cherry pieces to the perimeter to create a frame. Finally, I finished the piece with some spray lacquer.

I’m not sure I’ll be offering custom versions of these but if you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
