The Bow Tie Knife Rack

Bow tie keys are a common method to prevent a crack or split from further propagating. When designing this magnetic knife rack, I knew I had a piece of walnut with a decent sized split at the end. This was the perfect opportunity to try bow ties for the first time. The three maple bow ties are laid out along the crack, each slightly askew.

Inside of the board are 16 strong magnets that help hold the knives firmly against the wood. The rack attaches to a metal bracket with 4 additional magnets. This bracket can be attached to a wall with screws. It can also be attached with strong double sided tape if you can't screw into the surface (ie the side of a refrigerator).

I would be more than happy to make more of these racks though I can't always guarantee I'll have cracked and split lumber on hand.

The split in the walnut was probably from improper drying but nonetheless it became the focal point of the design.
